Beautiful Busanga Plains – Zambia

Location: Busanga Plains Camp – Mukambi Safaris – Unique By Nature

Nature never fails to amaze. A recent trip to Zambia’s Busanga Plains reaffirmed its affinity to inspire. Setting off from Mukambi Safari Lodge, anticipation accompanied by picnic and drinks for the long drive ahead. Excitement and heat rising, we embark on our adventure, out to collect stories on the plains. The popular tea spot upon the bridge always treats us with butterflies, the more delicate creatures of the bush performing in bright bursts of blues.

Evidence of close vicinity to the plains arrives in the form of tall termite towers, gathered together as if a cemetery of sand. These towers are an intricate web of intelligent design, the colony within including different castes, all with specific roles. Acting as an elaborate air conditioning system, the mound maintains a temperature of 31 degrees, the optimum temperature for the nest and circulating fresh air throughout. A mind-blowing engineering feat of nature!

Beyond the termite mounds, the landscape opens up to the iconic Busanga Plains, seemingly stretching to the horizon. With a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, the contrasting grass below is highlighted, lying almost vertically after being forced sideways by the wind and water over the rainy season.

A dazzle of Zebra welcomed us to the area, their bold coats standing out from the open plains. A nearby hippo did not exert the same curious energy as the zebra, soaking up the sun in an early morning nap. When sleep calls – one must oblige!

Our most treasured moment upon the plains was the first encounter of the landscape’s simple and vast beauty. The scenery was rich and lush with life; hundreds of lechwe, a paradise for birds, and hippos as far as the eye can see.

With the water still high, the channel by Busanga Plains Camp could not be crossed and we had to park our vehicle, travelling the terrain by alternative means. Exchanging our four-wheeled classic safari vehicle for a canoe, we continued our adventure! There is something about being so close to the elements, floating upon channel waters, a mere reach away from the intricate web of ecosystems below.

Gliding up to the beautifully unique camp we disembark with the feeling we are part of our surroundings. Moving from canoe to tent, we settle into our quarters nestled beneath the trees, once again immersed in nature. Panoramic views of the plains stretch out to the horizon, gifting a sense of infinite space, scattered with herds of lechwe. The vista and wildlife appear endless, as do the bird sightings which grace the plains, a haven for feather friends.

Orange hues bid farewell to the sun and are replaced with the orange flames of the campfire. Seated around in complete content, sundowners and stories are shared around the fire, heat and conversation rising into the night. Stars begin to light the evening sky, stealing the show with the shine and sheer number. With Busanga situated in a remote area of the park, there is zero light pollution, allowing the stars to take center stage.

Hippos share the evening conversation, calling out from the river beyond. Taking this as a summons to bed, hunger and travel desires satiated, we abscond to our respective tents. Hot waters bottles tucked into our sheets are the perfect end to the day, a luxurious lining to our wild adventure.
