South Luangwa National Park is the definition of wild. There is no shortage of dramatic scenery and wildlife sightings in this highlight of eastern Africa, recognised as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. Lush in landscape and sustained by the Luangwa River, this park is abundant in abundance.

Wildlife

Its remote location deems it ecologically unspoilt, the ox bow lagoons of the river creating a visual feast as well as unique and varied ecosystems within the park. Considered one of the best areas for game viewing, due to its diverse habitat of woodland, floodplains and riverine habitat, South Luangwa is a safari seekers dream. Large herds of elephants, buffalo, antelope, giraffe and zebra are found throughout the park, with a healthy predator population to match. The area is reputed to have the highest concentration of leopard, as well as lion, hyena and the endangered wild dog. Hippos and crocodiles are prolific, as well as riverine birdlife, with specialities such as the Pel’s fishing owl, Lillian’s love-bird and the African pitta.

As such a biodiverse and bountiful world of wildlife, the park is known as the birth of walking safaris – the guides are extremely knowledgeable, experienced and equipped to lead you through its wild landscapes.
